Palma Video

Although the pronunciation of spanish terms is painful at best and it’s all in all a little dry, this is a pretty interesting video which touches on some of the most important events in Palma’s history and the most visited monuments.  The music is AWESOME.  It’s only in English, although I can’t imagine anyone but a guiri being interested enough to watch the whole thing ;)

Impressive views of the Tramuntana Mountains to the west, with several peaks measuring over 1000 m high and up to 1450 metres in Puig Major’s case, and the Llevant Mountains to the east, with their lower profile that reaches 561 m at its highest point, reflect the islands’ most rugged terrain. The marina to the south and north and the central plain conceal landscapes that astonish hikers who adventure along their paths.

¿Quieres planear un paseo inolvidable en Mallorca pero no sabes ni dónde empezar?  La web oficial de las islas Baleares tiene un montón de enlaces útiles con indicaciones, mapas y ideas para hacer senderismo.

Mallorca es una isla que presenta una variedad de paisajes increíble. Eso se traduce en itinerarios de montaña, costa y llanura. La impresionantes vistas de Serra de Tramuntana al oeste con varios picos de más de 1000 m. hasta los 1450 del Puig Major y al este la Serra de Llevant de orografía más suave que alcanza los 561 en su punto más alto, son la cara más abrupta de la isla. Smooth Sailing

One of the ideas I'm playing with for my upcoming move to Palma is learning to sail.  Having been practically raised in a canoe, sailing is something I've always wanted to do but have never really had the chance.  However I feel like the fact that I'll be living on an island is the perfect opportunity to take some lessons and at least start to get my sea legs.  So here are some sailing schools' websites, if I end up taking classes I'll let you know which I recommend!   NB: The descriptions below are from the companies' websites.

RYA Sailing School

During your stay we will sail to charming harbours and explore Mallorca; you will learn ‘why’ you sail, not just ‘how’ you sail! We start our courses on Sundays; you will be introduced to your boat, your cabin and settled in. Una de las ideas que estoy barajando para mi próxima mudanza a Palma es la de aprender a navegar.  Ya que basicamente fui criada en una canoa, navegar a vela es algo que siempre he querido hacer pero nunca he tenido la posibilidad de hacerlo hasta ahora.  No obstante creo que el vivir en una isla me da la oportunidad perfecta de dar unas clases y por lo menos empezar a aprender de qué va.  Así que aquí os dejo con unas escuelas que dan clases de navegación con velero, si acabo asistiendo a alguna os diré cuál recomiendo!  Nota: Las descripciones son de las webs de las compañías.

Descubriendo Palma

Por fin, tras decidir a mudarme a una isla sin conocerla, planificar una mudanza y comenzar un blog que no estoy para nada cualificada para escribir, he tenido la oportunidad este fin de semana para conocer a mi nueva ciudad adoptiva XD
Así que os pongo aquí unas impresiones que hemos sacado de Palma y cosas que nos han resultado curiosas:

• Está supercómoda para moverte!  El centro es bastante compacto y se puede ir andando a todos lados, pero también hay una red de autobuses urbanos superfácil de utilizar que te llevan al aeropuerto, al puerto, a centros comerciales, a las plazas más transitadas y hasta las calas más recónditas.  Ya me he vuelto usuaria asidua de la línea 3... :P
• Me han encantado las cafeterías "Cappuccino" por su excelente servicio, café de buena calidad (de la marca Illy), ubicaciones convenientes y decoración cómoda y cuidada pero sobre todo por su tarta de plátano y caramelo.  Son pocos los postres que me han impresionado tanto... Delicioso!
• ¿Qué pasa con la Calle Velazquez?  Tiene dos carteles luminosos enormes encima de las entradas a la calle como si fuera la vía más importante de Palma pero os juro que no le he visto nada en especial aparte de una cafetería bastante decente...  ¿Alguien me puede ayudar a resolver el misterio?
• Parece ser realmente fácil andar en bici a todos lados, hay un montón de carriles bici por toda la ciudad y los conductores parecen ser un poco más conscientes de los ciclistas.  ¡Tengo muchas ganas de ir en bici a la playa por primera vez!

Finally, after deciding to move to an island without having ever been there, planning an overseas move and starting a blog which I'm not at all qualified to write, I got the chance this weekend to start to get to know my new adopted city XD
So here are just a few impressions and things I liked about Palma:

• It's super comfortable to get around!  The city center is compact and completely walkable but there's also a great network of city buses which are easy to use and will take you just about anywhere, from the airport, to the port, to shopping centers, from the busiest plazas to hidden coves.  In just one weekend I've become a regular user of line 3... :P
• I absolutely love "Cappuccino" cafés for their excellent service, great coffee (Illy brand), convenient locations and careful and comfortable decor, but above all for their banana and caramel cream pie.  Very few desserts have made such a lasting impression on me... Delicious!
• What is up with Velazquez Street?  Two gigantic neon signs mark the entrance as if it were the most importan street in Palma but I swear that I couldn't find anything special about it beyond a decent café... Can anyone resolve this mystery for me?
• It seems like getting around by bike is really easy, there are a bunch ofbike lanes all over the city and drivers seem to be at least conscious of the fact that cyclists exist.  I can't wait to take my bike to the beach for the first time!
